A sleigh bed is a style of bed that has curved or scrolled foot and headboards. The bed resembles a sleigh or a sled and this type of bed derives its name because of this shape. Mostly, wood is used to make this type of beds and they are quite heavy too. The style of a sleigh bed is derived from French and American furniture of early 1880s, which is also known as Empire style. This style drew its inspiration from the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.

Today, sleigh beds are being made from materials other than wood. These materials are iron, steel and aluminum and they are having less exaggerated curves of the foot and headboards.

A Sleigh Bed has a high, curved back and has the same design on the lower footboard. The design resembles a horse drawn sledge and usually made from mahogany or cherry wood. This makes it reminiscent of royal times and adds some class to any bedroom. The headboards of this type of bed are generally larger than its footboard. Both of them are curved with their tops rolling outwards. Such a bed lends a fabulous look to any bedroom with all the rich flourishes and twirls. Graceful rolling edges sets these beds apart from the sharp lines and block designs of other bed styles.

If you are opting for a sleigh bed for your bedroom, you should decorate the room with proper style. Wooden sleigh beds are generally made using tropical mahogany wood. These beds are constructed using 100% kiln dried hardwood to provide strength and longevity to the bed. Finishes are generally applied by hand to give it a rich look. These beds are supported by a quality framing system, headboard, footboard, and 4-slat system. The headboard size would determine how much prominence the bed would have in the context of the room. If it is to be the centerpiece of the room, then the bed should have a tall headboard. In case, the bed is secondary, a shorter headboard is to be recommended.

In case, sleigh beds are made of metal, they are generally made in traditional style. The appearance, strength and weight of such a metal bed would depend on the kind of metal used. Contemporary look could be given to sleigh bed by using both wood and iron.

These sleigh beds are available in various sizes of Twin, Full, Queen, King and Cal King. In the United States, they would be known as Single, Double, Queen-size, Eastern King and California King respectively.
