Your email marketing campaign is a vital part of how you stay in touch with your clients, keep them up-to-date, and revive their interest in your company. Of course, you can't do any of that if your email delivery rate is such that many of your emails end up being marked as spam before they reach your client's mailbox, are marked as spam by your clients, or are blacklisted. In order to protect your email delivery rate, you want to make sure that you are using software that can provide you with a spam check, an email blacklist check, and an overall summary of your email delivery stats. Whether you monitor this yourself, use a program, or hire someone else to do this for you, keeping track of delivery rates might just be the best thing you've done for yourself, marketing-wise, this year.

There are a number of things that should be done preventatively from your end that are quite simple. For example, you should secure your email server's IP address and make sure that it is configured to allow reverse DNS look-up. If you send large batches of email, or continuous email, you should ask to be whitelisted by major ISPs. Another solid way to protect yourself is to only use quality services. Free online email accounts that anyone can sign up for are not secure ways to go about sending out email, as they are far too likely to be used by hackers, spammers, and other unscrupulous email senders. You could be blacklisted simply because of a spammer that used the same email provider!

The best way to get yourself listed as spam is using a rented list, so that's out of the question. Another reason why many people are marked as spam by users who may even have signed up for the list is because of confusing or improper formatting. You always want a recognizable name- usually your company name- to show up in the "from" field. You also want to have unsubscribe information clearly listed in every email. Far too often, people who no longer wish to receive emails cannot easily find how to unsubscribe, and simply mark it as spam. That might work for the individual, but it looks bad for you. Another great way to end up in a spam box is to use words like "free offer" or multiple exclamation points at the end of a sentence. You want your emails to look appealing, but online, looking too good to be true usually ends you up in the spam box.
