As Henry David Thoreau once said, "Thought is the sculptor who can create the person you want to be." Who knew it was that simple? This "secret to happiness" is a principle understood by the greatest minds in history. Most people don’t understand the relationship between their thoughts and feelings. Anger, after all, doesn't just spring from nowhere. You must first have negative thoughts or images in your mind and those thoughts create the feeling of anger. The point here is not to try and think your way to happiness. The point is to understand that thoughts are just thoughts, but they have the ability to generate extremely powerful and life-altering emotions.

Once you understand the relationship between your thoughts and feelings, just having that understanding can liberate you from negative energy patterns that may have been producing anxiety, stress, or depression in your life. Just realize that your thoughts are the links to your happiness, and thus, your ability to manifest the reality your desire. Of course, you will naturally have thoughts that make you happy. In fact, the absence of negative thoughts creates a natural happiness and contentment within, but inevitably, these thoughts will ebb and flow like the tides. Remember, the positive psychology that produces lasting happiness is already within you, you simply need to give it permission to come to the surface.

Something you might learn from a positive thinking book, such as Dr. John Ryder's Positive Directions: Shifting Polarities to Escape Stress and Increase Happiness, is to not let your thoughts themselves become props for being happy. Let the natural happiness within arise from the absence of negativity and the understanding that thoughts are just thoughts. The key to positive psychology is awareness--when you're aware that you're feeling depressed, angry, or otherwise uncomfortable, you immediately know that your thinking is off and needs to be redirected in a positive and productive direction. Allow yourself to stop, take a step back, breathe deeply for a moment and experience the release of these thoughts. Remind yourself that you have everything you need to turn the circumstances at hand into a positive life lesson.

A stress management book might encourage you to take your experiences, positive or negative, all in stride. Allow yourself be amazed and marvel at this crazy, wonderful thing we call life. As the Buddha said, “We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.”
