Have you been watching TV lately? Beware the hoards of vikings, Visigoths, mongols and the like who are apparently trying to take you down at every possible opportunity! It would seem that they really only want to scare you into getting a new Capital One credit card; they seem to think it works better than offering cash back credit cards. Maybe you are not a TV watcher, but you still have undoubtedly been barraged by "pre approved" credit card offers, especially low interest credit card offers. Heck, the advertising circulars even have 'bad credit' credit card offers. There are even pop-up credit card offers every time you surf the Internet. What is there to do, but apply for one?

There is no real trick to applying for credit cards, the trick is actually in the shopping for a card that is right for you. Low interest credit card offers are often worth checking out, but by no means should you limit your investigation to those offers. Do your research. Generally there are three main places to go when looking into a new credit card: the mail, your bank, and the Internet. For the most part, that is also the most advisable order in which to search for a card that suits you.

Check the direct mail offers first- most of them will go directly into the recycling, but at least one offer a month is usually worth seriously considering. Be sure to read every last word of fine print so you know the real deal. Next, go to your banker and see what they can offer you. Take note, if you already have a credit card from your bank, wait and talk to them last. The Internet is your next research hot spot. Here again, be sure to read all the fine print; it is common for nasty little surprises to be hidden in there, like the old "your low interest rate turns into an attack on your paycheck with a 21 percent interest rate after the first year." You want to know about such realities before you apply, not after you get an outrageous bill, so do your reading thoroughly. After you have found the credit card that was made for you go back to your bank, show them the offer, and see if they will match or beat the offer. More often than not, they will.

Credit card offers are everywhere. By no means should you go applying for every card out there, and really most 'cash back' credit cards are barely worth owning, so be reasonable in your credit card acquisitions. It is advisable to limit your total number of credit cards to three, not including store charge cards. Do a little research and you can easily find a card that fits your lifestyle.
