Japanese swords represent the spirit and culture of Japan. Japanese swords consist of the sword of the Samurai, the Shogun, and the Ninja. Of all the Japanese swords, the samurai sword is considered the most deadly of traditional Japanese weaponry. The Japanese sword has been collected, idolized, worshipped, and deified by the people of Japan. The collection of such swords comprises of the Wakizashi, the Katana, the Tanto, the Kogatana, the Tachi, and the Daisho. Some of the Japanese swords are very ornate while some others are simple.

Forged out of steel, fire, and water, Japanese swords are one the finest edged blades crafted anywhere. The swords forged by the 14th and 15th century master craftsmen are national treasures. The sword sent from China to Queen Himeko of Wei Dynasty in 240 AD is believed to be the oldest of its kind.

Large numbers of Japanese swords were brought to the United States during and after the World War II. Most of these swords were military weapons made of machines while some others were hand made forged swords.

The type, condition, style, maker, and age are some of the main factors that determine the value of a Japanese sword. Most swords feature characters on the tang, which provide information about the maker and the year it was made. Still some older swords lack these types of information on the tang.

If you are planning to buy a Japanese sword or sell one, try to identify its original value. The shape, design, mounting, age, and the weight balance are some of the important things that increase the value of a Japanese sword in the market. Of course, you need to check the quality of the sword’s blade. Remember, an authentic Japanese sword traditionally polished by hand could cost thousands of dollars in the market.
