New barcode scanning solution has been tested in hospitals in ,Texas, the system has been produced to help prevent common medical errors happening within hospitals across the world.
Leaders in barcode system innovation and technology; IntelliDOT designed this unit. It had been announced recently that they had completed its installation of their brand new IntelliDOT Bedside Medication Administration across a network of hospitals across Texas. The unit is less than 8oz and designed to sit at the patient’s bedside, the unit will run for twelve hours and power is delivered from its in built battery system
The barcode unit is engineered to be placed by the side of the patient’s bed, the unit is designed to retain vital data about the patient and enable medical staff to easily pull back the personal details ,blood type and potentially medical history. Its strongest application will be in refernce to to the reduction of over or incorrectly prescribed medication. Portable handheld barcode reader units can be carried by the medical staff and allow them to read information about the patient immediately.
The intelliDOT systems will also allow the medical staff to enter information into the handheld barcode scanner about the patient, this information will then sync back to a database, allowing the information on the handheld barcode scanner to be digitally updated. This invention alone could digitise existing records and medical case data allowing local GP’s to access records of their current patients.
The barcode scanners technology implemented for this system is not groundbreaking, barcodes are used to retain high levels of information for some time, however the infrastructure required to manage these style systems are very inventive and IntelliDOT are experts in this area and must be applauded for their technology and research. Within the UK many Healthcare centres are still using paper filling and paper records. The UK NHS are still utilising outdated systems for patient medical history and prescribing medicine within health centres and hospitals within the UK, however technology like this still have a rather large financial value, so I do not expect to see this technology installed within many government run health centres and hospitals.
IntelliDOT will hopefully be applauded or given some appreciation for their hard work on this barcode system, for health and safety alone the systems could help to save lives and help to reduce medical accidents, for many medical institutions this should be worth the investment alone. Despite the concept of such a piece of technology, the sad fact is that I see many institutes investing elsewhere before investing in such a device.
