Health centres in Waco, Texas have been implementing a new barcode scanning technology; the system is designed to reduce the number of errors and mal-practice incidents across health centres throughout the US.
Leaders in barcode technology; IntelliDOT designed this unit. It had been announced recently that they had finished its implementation of their brand new IntelliDOT Bedside Medication Administration across a network of healthcare centres across Waco, Texas. The device is will be placed beside the patients bed, it is battery driven and has a twelve hour battery life.
The barcode unit is engineered to be sit at the bedside of the patient, it can retain key data regarding the patient and assist the medical team to easily view the medical history, blood type and personal details. Where it will make the most impact will be in refernce to to the reduction of over or incorrectly prescribed medication. Wireless barcode scanners will be carried by the medical staff and allow them to read information about the patient easily.
The intelliDOT systems will also allow the carer to enter information into their barcode device about the medical case, the data will then sync with to a central server, which allows the data on the barcode device to be digitally updated real time. This solution alone could digitise current patient records and medical history allowing resident doctors to view records of their current patients.
The barcode scanners technology put in place for this system is not groundbreaking, barcoding systems is currently used to retain differing types of data, saying this the infrastructure required to manage and update these style systems are extremely creative and IntelliDOT are experts in this field and must be applauded for their technology and research. In Britain many Hospitals are still using paper filling and paper records. The national health service in the UK are still using outdated systems for patient medical history and prescribing medicine within hospitals and health centres across the UK, however with technology such as this having a considerable dollar value it will be a long time before many hospitals and health services install a fully paperless system.
IntelliDOT will hopefully be rewarded or given some acknowledgement for their work on this device, from a health and safety aspect alone the technology should save lives and help to reduce incidents of mal practice, for a great many hospitals this should be worth the investment alone. Despite the innovation of such a piece of technology, the sad fact is that I see many organisations investing elsewhere before they invest in such a device.
