When you take another peek at the clock and it says 3 AM, and you still haven't gone to sleep, you would likely be willing to take anything that anybody would give you to help you fall asleep, wouldn't you? I know I would…I have been there. Then the next morning after only a very brief few hours of sleep, I have come to my senses and know that I don't want to get hooked on sleeping pills. I drag myself through my day the same way you do. Usually the next night I sleep like the proverbial tired two-year-old.

Like most people, I only have the occasional bout with insomnia and I can usually figure out what it is in my life that has caused it just like you can. We can count ourselves among the lucky ones. There are those who have very serious and debilitating insomnia. They don't just have an occasional sleepless night. Their insomnia is ongoing and long-lasting. For these people, sleeping pills are both a blessing and a curse.

Most prescription sleeping pills are addictive. Not only are they addictive, but the body adjusts to them, and it takes more and more of the medication to achieve the same results. They get hooked on sleeping pills. Their bodies demand the drug, and yet they still are not sleeping well. It is a dilemma, and one that the drug companies are trying to address.

There is a new generation of sleeping pills that are coming onto the market. These sleeping pills will help insomniacs to fall asleep, but they are not at all addictive. When the sleeping pills are no longer needed, there are no withdrawal symptoms because there is no addiction. Sleeping pills are getting safer, and that is good news for those who suffer from frequent insomnia.
