I have long been an advocate of using credit to get you where you want to be. For me, it all started off pretty simply- I was looking through the Capital One credit card offers that had arrived in the mail and wondering if any of those cards would be right for me. I know, it's a bit of a novel concept for some people- after all, we aren't really used to looking at credit cards in the same way we do other items that feel more personalized, but we really should be. All the different Capital One credit cards got me thinking-- what did I really want out of a credit card? My first instinct was to find the "cool" card, the one with the best benefits, but then, I wasn't sure how that would play out long run.

Here's the thing--so many cards offer some nifty trick, like the ability to turn your purchases into airline tickets, cash back, or money set aside in a savings account based on how much you spend in general, at the grocery store, etc. At what point do these outweigh the other aspects of the card, such as the interest rate or the fees attached for certain transactions, and so on? So many people today get so focused on what they "get" from the card, that they forget to look at these vital pieces of information. Your first task as somebody who will make their credit work for them is to always read the fine print and be sure you fully understand what is on the table.

The next step is to use that credit card for exactly what it was intended. Are you looking into balance transfer credit cards? This is a great example of a card that has a very specific initial purpose. If you are looking to pay off a large balance, you have several options. One, you can transfer the balance over to a card that has an initial interest-free period attached and pay off the balance during this period. There is usually a fee attached to this, usually around 3%. You can also use a free balance transfer to a card that either has a grace period or a very low interest rate. Either way, it's a great way to pay a balance down. It can also be used as a good starting point for people who are ready to be out of debt and have the means to make payments. Being debt-free is a really great feeling!

The next step is to use that credit. The perfect amount of usage is that which increases your credit score, but keeps you out of debt. If possible, pay off your credit card in full each month- this ensures you don't build up debt, but it also keeps you active in building credit. Paying off a loan is also a way to gain credit, but again, only if you actually have the means to pay it off on time. Avoid late fees like the devil, and never ever be so late in making a payment that it shows up on your credit report. Keep an eye on your credit report- identity theft is a rising crime and it is quite an undesirable experience.
