Slow cookers are a nifty appliance to have in the kitchen. It both saves time and it also produces nifty, well-cooked, nicely tasting meals. Not everyone has used a slow cooker though, and for those people who have not, here is a little practical information.

Probably some people will actually be skeptical of the slow cooker’s safety, given that the machine has to be left running for quite a large amount of time. So, if your question is about safety, the answer is yes, the slow cooker is not dangerous. This cooking machine operates at a low temperature, mostly at about 76 to 138 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the power consumed from a slow cooker is much less that if you used your conventional over.

One of the super things about preparing dishes at this low of temperature is that when preparing non-prime meat cuts they become just as nice as preparing the more expensive prime cuts the conventional way. Now in terms of safety when it comes to the food, the direct heat, the time it takes to prepare your dishes, as well as the steam that is trapped inside the tight-lidded pot kills the bad bacteria in the food.

Now, getting to the cooking procedures. As is practical when handling all kinds of food, you should start with a clean work space and clean tool. Clean your hands thoroughly before handling any food and keep your meats in the refrigerator right until the moment that they need to be added. Bacteria multiplies at a quick pace in room temperature so make sure that the slow cooker is preheated a little before adding the meat to your meal from the refrigerator. You may use the veggies ahead of the meat because they mostly cook slower than meats. It is important to note though that meats must be defrosted prior to being placed inside a slow cooker for better results.

Ideally meals that can be cooked in a slow roaster are those that are moist such as soups, stews or pot roasts so they would not dry out. Remember as well that a large slow roaster should not be used to handle single servings of food or they will be in danger of being overcooked. A cooker ideally should be filled around 50 % of the container capacity, but not to exceed two thirds. While running avoid opening the lid as much as possible, only doing so to determine if it is finished, or to mix the food. Opening the lid brings down the temperature suddenly and will affect the doneness of the food.

When deciding on which cooking setting to use on your slow cooker, you have to take into consideration the length of time that you are going to be cooking it. For hard meat cuts, a greaterlonger preparation time utilizing a low setting is desirable. However some useful advice is to put the setting on high for the first cooking hour, then set it to low for the remaining hours. If for some reason the power shuts off midway through cooking the food, immediately finish cooking it on your stove. If the meal has been at room temperature for a bit of time half-done, the meal might be safer to just throw this batch away and begin again.

after you have finished a successful meal, transfer the contents at once. Remove the container, clean thoroughly, and make sure that it is not wet before storing.
