You don’t need a feng shui certification to take simple steps toward increasing the feng shui in your bedroom. Interestingly, the bedroom is often the most overlooked room in the house when considering feng shui, but it’s actually the most important. You do, after all, spend your sleeping hours there. A bedroom with good feng shui can be both relaxing and exciting, a good balance of nourishing, restful energy and passionate, sensual energy. Here are some do’s and don’ts to increase the feng shui of your bedroom.

Do:

1. Follow feng shui guidelines for your bed: if possible, avoid placing your bed directly in line with the door. Have bedside tables on each side of the table, and make your bed accessible on both sides. A good quality mattress and a solid headboard and high quality sheets made with natural fibers are a great way to heighten feng shui energy.
2. Have various lighting sources in your bedroom. Toxin-free candles are the best source of feng shui lighting. Installing a light with a dimmer switch is also an option. Remember that light is one of the strongest manifestations of energy and the #1 nutrient.
3. Use soothing colors. When decorating with good feng shui in mind, soft colors support the best flow of positive energy in the bedroom, ideal for restorative sleep, sexual health and healing. The best colors for bedroom feng shui are known as the “skin colors,” varying from pale white to dark brown.
4. Keep the TV, treadmill, and computer out of the bedroom. These devices zap valuable energy from your bedroom.
5. Take steps to provide clean, nourishing air to your bedroom. Opening the windows often or using an air purifier are both good options.

Don’t:

1. Keep plants in your room. As stated above, having clean air in the bedroom while you sleep is extremely important. As you probably remember from elementary school science lessons, plants release carbon dioxide during photosynthesis…not conducive to clean air. Plants are fine for any other area of the house, though.

2. Keep a variety of mementos from exes in your bedroom. This is negative energy that focuses on the past, not the future. If this memorabilia from past relationships must be kept, it should not be kept in the bedroom.

3. Make your bedroom your home office, too. Computers and phones zap energy from your bedroom. A home office where you work, feel stressed, and exert negative energy is not supportive of the goals of your bedroom: love, healing, and relaxation.

Simple steps like the ones above will greatly improve the harmony and balance of your home, and life.
