Are majority of long married couples not happy in their relationships? That question has been bothering me for quite some time now. As a consultant of Feng Shui, I encounter several couples with less than perfect marriages. My clients will quite often ask me for some sort of "secret" remedy that will magically fix what is wrong with their marriage.

Asking around, I polled a few of my married friends and got their opinion on the matter. I choose this select group because they are older - over fifty years old - and have been married for many years. Their answer shocked me a lot. Based on anecdotes they have from their own experiences and those from friends, they think that nine out of ten married couples are somehow unhappy in their marriage.

It is rather sad, if it is true, that they are not able to live happily ever after, just like it happens in fairy tales.

The question now to be asked is if there is a cure. Maybe there is.

It is also a practice to check the horoscope. The Ba Zi of the intended couple are checked for compatibility, before they are allowed to tie the knot.

Will this provide the desired results? While it may increase the chances, there is still a chance it won't work. However through years of observation, they found out that if you combine it with some conditions, you can increase the chances of having a happy and lasting marriage.

Those with a history of unsuccessful relationships or marriages, need to especially take note of this wisdom.

The following conditions apply.

Years ago, the husband was always older than his wife. Such as this is a custom. It cannot and should not be broken. However the ancients also observed that for those with unsuccessful marriages or relationships, breaking the tradition can be a solution. In ancient times the Chinese believed that a wife was older, even if she had been born only a day before her husband. Although, for an improved outcome, a greater age difference is optimal.

The other option for a more successful relationship is for the husband to be much older than the wife. To the ancient Chinese, much older means at least 8 years apart. In practice, ten or fifteen years older is perfectly permitted or wanted.

It would also increase the chances if there is a big disparity in the social and economic standard between the husband and the wife. An example of this would be a couple where the husband is a degreed corporate executive, but the wife is a product of a less wealthy family, and has had little schooling herself. Can it be switched to the opposite way? This is unlikely, because historically, the job of primary provider has belonged to the husband. However in current modern times, where a lot of women earn more than than their husbands, why not?

The earlier days the condition applies to woman's only If she cannot be a successful first wife, it does not mean that she cannot be successful being the second or third one. Therefore, a successful option for women is often to become the "other woman." I have no idea about being the alternate man, you know!

What if none of the above works?

The final option is to have a spouse that is of a different race or from a different culture. For example, an Indian and a Chinese or between two Chinese brought up in different places. For example, one brought up in China and in the other in the United States.

These are wise words which our ancestors have left for us. Test it out - in particular, if you have problems in your relationship. You cannot possibly lose!
