There is a free public education offered to all American children that covers an education from kindergarten through grade 12.

There is no charge made to parents for this education. It is paid for with public funds -- usually in the form of property taxes.

The offer of a free public education, however, runs out about the time a child reaches his or her 18th or 19th birthday. A high school diploma is
nearly essential in today's world.

For many reasons, people need to get their high school diploma online rather than in a brick-and-mortar school building.

Getting a GED (General Education Diploma) is an option, of course, but it really is not the same thing as a high school diploma. A GED has value but a value that is somewhat limited.

People who get GEDs only must pass tests rather than complete courses and for this reason some businesses do not accept a GED as equivalent to a high school diploma.

While brick-and-mortar high schools usually extend the offer of a free public education and a high school diploma to people up to age 20 (this varies from state to state), online high school diplomas can be acquired by people of all ages.

More and more students who are still eligible for a free public school education and a high school diploma are opting for going to high school online. The reasons are as varied as the young people who choose these options.

One of the major misconceptions about people attending high school online is that they are somehow troubled or in trouble, and that is most assuredly not the case.

Another misconception about credits attained through online high schools is that the credits are not transferable to regular high schools. In most cases the credits can be transferred without any problem at all.
