I don't like cell phones. I don't like having to check my messages. I don't like phone calls and I don't like being obligated to receive or return them simply because I own a phone. Typically, I ignore the rules of common courtesy which earns me a one way ticket onto others' "People to Resent" list. Cell phones are noisy, delicate, and irritating in their necessity.

But I wouldn't live without one. I have tried that, too. It's even worse, you can't even take the sell-out road of texting to avoid actual phone conversation. You can't reserve a hotel room. You can't check the time or the weather. I did not learn this at home, I learned this while traveling.

Who travels with a cell phone these days, you ask? Everyone does. Everyone travels with a cell phone, and if they don't, they wish they did. It's that important. Not only is it safer to travel with a cell phone, it's the only way to keep yourself sane. There are too many unknown factors, too many unforeseen last-minute details that have to be confirmed, to assume that you can travel happily without a cell phone.

International cell phones are the greatest invention in travel history since the airplane. They will save your sanity by working, as promised, internationally. That means no buying a new SIM card in every country you visit, because your international cell phone is compatible in England, Italy, Egypt, and pretty much everywhere else. For the commitment phobic, you can get an international cell phone rental, my personal favorite. Pay an upfront price, buy a modest plan, and get out of the country for a while. When you get home and want to get back to your life, just give it back. And that's that.

If you're truly a thrill seeker, you won't be expecting any phone to work for you overseas, because you want to do something weird like live in a cave or raft down the Nile. That's ok, there are satellite cell phones that will work in these crazy remote places. Don't assume you won't need it, because you will. And you'll thank the gods of modern technology when you call to check on your life from the Amazonian jungle.
