Free satellite channels growing in numbers and making FTA receivers as a must-have gadget

Pansat, Viewsat, Nfusion, SonicView – I am sure somehow you have heard these brand names. They are the world’s leading FTA or ‘Free-to-Air” broadcast signal receivers. Free-to-air programs are increasingly becoming popular since they allow you to enjoy absolutely free programs with no strings attached like monthly payments or pay-per-view. You only need a FTA ‘system’ at your home to enjoy hundreds of FTA programs. An FTA system or package includes the FTA receiver together with accessories like dish antenna, LNB, switches, motors etc.

Satellite TV and programs are now taking up the major pie of entertainment sources. With lot of broadcasts being sold at quite high prices, people are looking for those ‘free-to-air’ channels that quench their thirst for news and entertainment. Why? There are number of reasons. Firstly FTA programs are without any strings of hidden prices, monthly installments or yearly contracts – they literally are “FREE”. Second, they offer a variety (much more than what pay channels do) of programs like news, drama, sports or even movies. Third, they are easy to use and hardly any logistics are attached to them. Fourth, they can be used in remote or rural areas where cable operators are absent. Another reason for popularity is FTA programs include purely local, ethnic, religious or community based broadcast.

Having given a brief idea about FTA programs, I am sure I will face the inevitable question, “what are my options or which FTA receiver should I use?”. Answering this is a pretty difficult job. There is really no ‘the solution’. FTA receivers of today come with a host of attractive features. For unique features in the popular brands of FTA receivers or FTA systems, one may get confused about their choices. In the electronics market you will find various models. Fortec, Captain, Conaxsat, CaptiveWorks, Viewsat, Nfusion, Coolsat, SonicView, BlackBird, Ariza, UltraStar, Digiwav, MultiStar and Twinhan are some popular names. If this list seems to be very long, you’ll get further puzzled when you find each brand name has a number of brands. However, I suggest a shorter list of brands. Keep your brand names confined to Viewsat, Nfusion, Pansat and SonicView.

All these four brands fully support the DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) format and can receive the standard MPEG-II data compression protocol. They all come with their unique technical specifications and special package price. They are of two main categories – standard format and High Definition (HD) format. Except Nfusion, all three other brands have their own HD model receivers.

Viewsat models have price ranging around 130 to 200 USD. Their HD models range is little over 400 USD. Models include, Viewsat Extreme, Viewsat Lite, Viewsat Ultra, Viewsat Pro and Viewsat 9000HD V2. Pansat on the other hand has its models like Pansat 250SM, Pansat 2800A, Pansat 3500SD, Pansat 9200HD, Pansat 6000HXC and Pansat 2700A. Standard format receivers may cost you around 200 USD while the HD supported format may go as high as 400 USD. SonicView models have different FTA systems and stand-alone receivers. They are reasonably priced at 200 USD (standard) and 420 USD (HD). Nfusion has captured the market with its lone model Nfusion Nova which is selling at 220 -250 USD in retail market. If you are convinced enough and wish to switch to FTA programs, I suggest you go through the brochures describing the various models. You may visit www.geosatellite.net for a comparative study and eBay and other internet retailers for stealing some cheap deals.
