Creativity is always individual. The original creative impulse, regardless of the work of the artistic person whether they are scientist or artist, always begins in the individual mind. Creativity is not just about exploring but is exploring within a context; it is stepping outside boundaries, but not too much. It is a tension between breaking boundaries and imposing new ones. Creativity is about breaking down prior assumptions and making new connections for new ideas. It is about taking what is accepted and trying to think about that particular thing in new and different ways. Finding a new way of looking at something creates a change or a shift.

What is creativity? That can be a difficult question to answer because of its very individual nature. However, Avital Gertner-Samet defines true creativity this way: "True creativity is about nothing other than personal expression and passion, and the rewards are far in excess of material". Personal expression is key here. Personal expression speaks to the individual nature of creativity, that is that it is personal and unique. It seems today many people are trying to find ways to stand out and be different from others around them. Unleash the creative child within you by first of all realizing that you are unique and different from other people already. Psychologists and sociologists have long debated the "nature versus nurture" question. Whether we are whom we are because of outside influences and how we are raised, or whether we are who we are because of inborn traits and qualities? The answer to that question really does not matter. Whatever way we as individuals become the people we are, we do. We exhibit qualities and traits that make us different, even ever so slightly, from anyone else on the planet.

Creativity is an attribute that exists within all individuals and can be improved with practice. Creativity is also at the heart of the human condition. Through it we make sense of the world and we grow in wisdom. Creativity is the key to economic prosperity. Being able to come up with new ways to do age old things and to truly innovate is a quality that individuals, corporations and indeed, our society as a whole seeks. So if this quality is so important, why do so many people feel they are not creative? What are the keys to unleash the creative child within you? As a child there is often this natural curiosity and optimism that tends to lessen as we age. The stresses of modern life crowd in. People become preoccupied with making a living, paying bills, meeting deadlines, fulfilling personal and professional obligations. This means that the creativity and wonder you had as a child, while still there is displayed and buried.

To unleash the creative child with in you, try to incorporate these five things into your daily activities in some way. The changes do not have to be these BIG massive things. First, true change happens over time. It takes rehearsing a repeated action by repetition at least five times before it even begins to become a habit. Unleash the creative child within you by:

1. Taking time to notice the things around you that are themselves unique. When you train your eyes to look for the unusual and different, you will begin to see more around you. Creativity begins with a greater awareness.

2. Spend time around creative people. Take the time to appreciate the special qualities in the things they create. Creative qualities can be found in so many things from a wonderful piece of writing that makes you look at something in a new way to "modern art" or the detailed blueprints of a skyscraper.

3. Take time in your day for reflective thought. If you are not one to spend a quiet time alone, take five minutes and sit in silence. This can cause your mind to think or new and different things because it is not busy with the tasks of the day.

4. Make time in your day to "play". Do something fun just for you that will make you feel good. Don't worry whether anyone is watching. Go to the park and watch children playing. Perhaps go after hours and climb to the top of a slide and, while exercising appropriate levels of caution and "common sense", slide down to the bottom. Sit on a swing and go up and down a few times. We have this idea that all that is just for kids, but the same feelings of exuberance you felt as a child, you can feel again. Forget your preconceptions about what should be. Just enjoy the moment.

5. Live with passion. That sounds like a cliché, but when you put the right amount of feeling and emotion into what you do, then you can more easily unleash the creative child within you. See the opportunity in whatever happens. Even in a negative event can usually be found something positive. If you do something, give yourself to it 100%. Find pleasure in the simplest of things like a cool breeze or a beautiful sunset. When you do this you will begin to see yourself, those around you and your environment differently. You will begin to unleash the creative child within you.

When you attempt to put some of these small changes into your daily routine, you will notice that more positive thought begin to fill your mind. You see things differently because of an elevated awareness of what is possible. You will see that creativity is not exclusively the domain of particular disciplines or types of institutions. Creativity is doing something in a simpler and better way. When you recognize all this, then you will have truly learned how to unleash the creative child within you.
