Binocular telescopes are also known as “field glasses”. It has two identical telescopes that are mounted on both sides. It is made parallel in order for the user to see clearly in the right direction.

Binocular telescopes come in different designs that allow the user to hold the binoculars with hands, one hand and the larger ones with a stand or tripod. It provides the user a 3-dimensional figure.

Development of Binoculars

• Galilean Binoculars: The styles and attributes of these binoculars are exclusive from the 17th century telescope. Early binoculars use “Galilean optics”. The Galilean optic lens make use of concave aim and concave eyepiece. It represents a straight picture but is not able to perform on high magnification. This design is used in cheap models. It is also available in theaters and operas as “opera or theater glasses”

• Porro Prism Binoculars: This type of binocular is named after Ignazio Porro, an Italian optician. He was the one who patented this system in the year 1854.. This type of binoculars was further enhanced in the late 1800s by Carl Zeis.. This binocular is composed of a Porro prism incased in a double prism with a “Z” shaped pattern that produces a straightened image.

• Roof Prism Binoculars: These binoculars were used in the early 1880s. It was designed by a man named Achille Victor Emile Daubresse. Binoculars are usually named after its’ designer. It can either be Schmidt-Pechan prism or Abbe-Koenig prism. Abbe-Koenig prism is named after Ernst Karl Abbe and Albert Koenig. In the early 1900s Carl Zeis also filed for the exclusivity of this two types of binoculars. The binocular models were made in order to set the image straight and fold its optical path. Compared with the Porro prisms this design costs more. The objective lenses are in line with its eyepieces.

Visual Parameters

The details that are listed on the prism’s cover plate explains the “power magnification” of the binocular. It has a 50 millimeter “objective diameter’ and 372 feet or 113 meters of “Field view” at a thousand yards. Binocular designs and types depend on what specific thing it will be used. Every design makes a certain parameter which is listed on the prism’s cover plate.

• Magnification: The extent of the binoculars magnification is dependent on the eyepiece’s focal length and objective’s focal length.

• Field View: This is determined by the binoculars’ optical design. It is expressed in angular value or linear value. An example of linear value is the meters or feet in width that will be seen at a thousand yards. An example of angular value would be the degrees that can be viewed Angular value in the other hand gives you information on the field view in degrees.

• Eye Relief: The distance between the eyepiece and the image is what we call the eye relief. It decides on where the viewer should position their eyes to see the image clearly.

• Objective Diameter: This determines the amount of light that can be collected in order to form the image. It is notated in millimeters.
