While we’re waiting for the scientific community to develop new technologies and make alternative fuels more accessible to us, there are a few things we can all do while driving our fossil-fuel powered cars in order to reduce our oil consumption and the resulting pollution.
For one thing, the larger and heavier a vehicle is, the more fuel it is going to require to move it across the open road. That means you can reduce your fuel consumption simply by making sure you keep your trunk empty unless you really need to haul something. A lot of people keep all kinds of tools and other items that they rarely use in their trunk, using it for additional storage. Obviously there are a few things like jumper cables that you don’t want to be without, but do you really need everything in there? Take a few moments to go through your stuff and see what you can remove to lighten your load. You can also remove your bike rack or other items that are creating wind resistance.
Another simple way to make sure you’re fuel use stays low is by making sure your tires are in good condition and that they remain filled to the optimal level. A tire that is properly inflated has creates less friction as it rolls, meaning less power is required to push it forward. They even make low-rolling resistance tires if you want to go all the way!
Also, watch your speed. Any time you change speed—from accelerating to braking—you are going to use energy. The slower you do either of these things, the less energy is required. So before you punch the gas, or slam on the brakes, think about what you’re doing. As far as your driving speed, 60 mph is considered the rate that produces the best efficiency. Even going five miles an hour over that speed will decrease your efficiency by 6%.
Finally, if you are ready to make a real commitment to reducing your fuel consumption, consider buying a new car that is designed for lower fuel use or which employs hybrid technology. The Toyota Prius, for example, rates 60 miles per gallon in the city and 51 on the highway which is incredible for a mid-sized sedan. You can also explore some of the alternative fuels like biodiesel which do not require any modification to your existing car.
