One thing about aura colors, or even just auras in general, is that a great many people have only a very passing knowledge of what an aura even is. Many people, when they come across research on auras, are amazed to realize just how much they didn't know, or how mistaken they were in what they believed an aura to be. A comprehensive understanding would include details such as the fact that an aura is made up of the electromagnetic field that exists around the body- the Human Energy Field, or HEF. Every object and organism in the universe has such a field around it. The HEF is an oval and extends out from the body about a meter (usually between 2 and 3 feet) on all sides of the body. Aura cameras use information from this field around the body, as well as biofeedback, to produce an aura photo.

For those familiar with the Indian chakra system, this has a great deal in common with the way that auric fields are understood. In fact, they are referencing the exact same energy fields in the body. In order to understand fully the phenomena that is the body's energy centers, it is helpful to have the information from all sources- so even if your interest is solely in the manifestation of aura, an understanding of the chakra system is important. Each chakra is interrelated with the others, and can affect the health and behavior of a person both physically and emotionally. This is why the healing arts that acknowledge the chakra system also set out to bring balance to the body's energies.

Each chakra or auric body has different needs that are associated with it that also correspond to the part of the body where the chakra is located. The color spectrum is also employed in this manner- useful not only in visualization and aura photos, but also in color healing and energy healing. If a picture of auric bodies comes out extremely red, for example, then it may be that the first chakra is the dominant energy in the body at that time, and may in fact need to be brought back into balance.

The first chakra (red) is located at the base of the spine at the perineum and is associated with the physical body and its base needs. The second chakra (orange) is located in the belly, just under the belly button, and deals with emotions in relationship to the self. The third chakra (yellow) can be found at the solar plexus and is the connection of the physical to the emotional body. The fourth chakra (orange) is the heart chakra and focuses on love and relationships. The fifth chakra (blue) is the throat chakra, which concerns itself mostly with communication. The sixth chakra (indigo) is located at the third eye (above and centered over the eyes), and is the source of divine love. Finally, the seventh chakra (violet) at the top of the head is the connection of self to divinity and the universe.
