It was 1963, much was happening in the musical scene, in England especially. Many of the clubs were featuring bands that were covering old blues standards.

The local blues scene was what was happening then, with members from many of these local bands that would move into the limelight a few short years later.

One such band was called The Roosters. Eric Clapton was just a young kid then. The Roosters was the first band Eric cut his licks in. The Rooster's covered a lot of the old blues standards that many of the other local English bands were doing then. As local bands go, most of them did not have much to offer except a lot of energy and raw power. This was what packed the clubs back then and what a time it was.

Eric was a standout performer even at such an early age. Most of The Rooster's fan club came to hear Eric Clapton. Although humble in his own way, Clapton had something the rest of the band did not have. Eric had a raw talent and when he picked up his guitar, it became more than more than a prop to make noise with.

Late in 63, Paul Samwell-Smith and Keith Relf of The Yardbirds asked Eric to be a part of their band after hearing Clapton play.

Shortly after joining The Yardbirds, Eric was dubbed "Slowhand" because, whenever Eric would break a string playing, he took his time changing out the broken guitar string for a new one. Every time this happened on stage, the audience would do a slow hand clap as Clapton would change out his broken string. Thus, "Slowhand" became Eric Clapton's nickname.

The nickname stuck and to this day he is still very fond of his nickname that he has had now for all of these years.

Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England to Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer. Eric was raised by his grandma Rose and Rose's second husband Jack. Eric grew up believing that Rose and Jack were his mom and dad and that his real mother was his older sister.

In 1962, after completing one year at the Kingston College of Art, Eric dropped out and began busking with his guitar for pocket change before joining The Roosters.

Eric Clapton's life has been a very filled one, to say the least. His personal life, as well as professional accomplishments, could fill a four volume biography.

Clapton's guitar style of influence can be attributed to B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, but most notably to Robert Johnson. Eric considers Robert Johnson to be the best blues musician to have ever been born.

After The Yardbirds came the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith then Derek and the Dominoes.

While with Derek and the Dominoes, Eric and the band developed a serious heroin habit that eventually broke the band up. This was not the first time drugs interfered with Eric's life, nor would it be the last time. But through it all, Eric Clapton prevailed and has been clean of drugs for several years.

Eric Clapton has been a solo act for decades now. A true rock and roll legend, Clapton has a garnered a multitude of music awards and is noted to be one of the most successful musicians of all time.
